In 2009, Compassion Over Killing launched a tremendously successful Takoma VegWeek campaign that included a Mayoral Proclamation as well as public pledges from MD Senator Jamie Raskin and MD Delegate Tom Hucker to go veg for one week.
This year, we've expanded our campaign by creating Maryland VegWeek, and even more elected officials are signing on:
In addition to Sen. Raskin and Del. Hucker renewing their pledges, Congresswoman Donna Edwards and Montgomery County Council Vice President Valerie Ervin are also pledging to go veg for one week!
The good news doesn't stop there: On Monday night, Takoma Park, Md. Mayor Bruce Williams signed a Proclamation officially declaring April 24 through April 30, 2010 as Maryland VegWeek. The Proclamation not only encourages "residents to participate by choosing vegetarian foods as a way to help protect the planet, their health, and animals and to explore the wide variety of vegetarian cuisine offered" in the city, but also expresses appreciation to Compassion Over Killing for organizing and promoting this week-long celebration.
Join us—along with Rep. Edwards, Sen. Raskin., Del. Hucker and MoCo. County VP Ervin—for a Maryland VegWeek Kick-Off Party on Sat., April 24 in Takoma Park!
Maryland VegWeek also offers educational events all week long, including a free cooking class by Mimi Clark as well as a free nutritional lecture by Dr. Michael Greger. Plus several restaurants throughout the area are offering discounts and specials for the week.
Get more details at MarylandVegWeek.com—and spread the word, asking your friends and family to pledge to go veg for one week!
