Watch our 30-second ads today — and support our work to spread a message of compassion to today's youth.

Cover Story in this Week's TIME: "Getting Real About the High Price of Cheap Food"

By Bryan Walsh as printed in the August 31st issue of Time.

Though we might still like to imagine our food being raised by Old MacDonald, chances are your burger or your sausage came from what are called concentrated-animal feeding operations (CAFOs), which are every bit as industrial as they sound. In CAFOs, large numbers of animals — 1,000 or more in the case of cattle and tens of thousands for chicken and pigs — are kept in close, concentrated conditions and fattened up for slaughter as fast as possible, contributing to efficiencies of scale and thus lower prices. But animals aren't widgets with legs. They're living creatures, and there are consequences to packing them in prison-like conditions.

DC Mayor Recognizes DC VegFest!

We're thrilled to announce that Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed a letter of greetings in honor of the DC VegFest, being held this Sat., Sept 12, at George Washington University!

Excerpt: "Several nonprofits are hosting this event to give our citizens the opportunity to learn more about making healthy food choices. I thank the participants for your commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles."

September Is National Chicken Month

In an attempt to boost post-summer lagging sales, the chicken industry has declared September as "National Chicken Month." Sadly, billions of chickens are raised and killed for human consumption each year in the U.S., many of whom suffer from crippling leg disorders due to intensive genetic selection for extremely rapid growth rates.

COK sees "National Chicken Month" as a great opportunity to shed light on the industry's cruel, yet standard, practices and to encourage people to choose compassion by leaving chickens--and all other animals--off our plates.

COK Update: We Met Our MTV Match!

We'd like to extend our deepest appreciation for your incredible generosity! Your support enabled us to raise a total of $60,000 to air our powerful 30-second pro-vegetarian ads on MTV! Each of our commercials shines a bright light on the routine abuses kept hidden behind the closed doors of factory farms and further encourages viewers to visit TryVeg.com for more information. Please stay tuned for details on when and where these ads will be airing during the fall of 2009!

New Investigation Uncovers Hatchery Horrors

Thrown, dropped, mutilated, and ground-up alive. This is the shocking reality faced by hundreds of thousands of chicks each day at the world's largest egg-laying breed hatchery - Hy-Line International in Spencer, Iowa. New hidden camera footage obtained at this facility during a Mercy For Animals undercover investigation gives a disturbing glimpse into the cruel and industrialized reality of modern hatcheries.
